Perspectives

There's something wrong with a society that forgives one who hates those of a certain religion, yet rejects someone else for being an ardent supporter of his.

Are you sympathizing with scientologists?

Think of it as sympathizing with anyone who has faith, whatever their religion.

Thinking scientology is a religion is a common, but erronous, assumption.

They are the first ones to say they only are classified as a religion for the tax incentives. Well, at least that is what L. Ron Hubbard explained.

It is more aligned with "get rick quick" schemes; promising wealth in exchange for robbing others of their wealth.

Yep. Not sure about anon's "get rick quick" comment, but I dare say that scientologists would consider it their faith, if not their religion.

From my heathen eyes, scientology is indistinguishable from a religion. Fantastic stories that purport to explain the universe all sort of run together at some point, differing only in the particulars.

Having faith in your chosen mythology is still having faith, whether it's tied to a financial scam or not. I'm not of the "faith having" crowd, so I just try to be respectful and treat faithful people all the same.

Unless you're using your faith to justify murder. In that case, you can go straight to hell and I'd be happy to see you off. But that's not the case with any readers here.

That really wasn't the point though. The point was, we forgive Mel for hating Jews, but we pile on Tom because he's a weirdo (according to that poll anyway). Just seems backwards to me.

Scientology is not merely a religion, it's a cult. And cults freak people out. There's a lot of difference between sitting through mass once a week and the brain washing that goes on in that "church." So yeah, I'd rather be trapped in an elevator with a racist than a cult member. And Tom Cruise is just really effing creepy.

I don't pretend to be up on the intricacies between religions/cults or whatever. I just note that the only difference between a cult and a religion is the number of followers (and perhaps, elapsed time).

Some truth to that. The romans called the early christians a cult.

Maybe it has nothing to do with religion, just that we think his acting sucks ass.
